Kim Fupz Aakeson was already a successful and established novelist and illustrator when in the mid-90’s he switched careers and enrolled at Denmark’s National Film School to study screenwriting. Since then he has established himself as one of Scandinavia’s leading screenwriters – in all categories his films have won 106 national and international awards and received 195 nominations across a whole range of genres.
His 2011 feature Perfect Sense, starring Ewan McGregor and Eva Green, directed by David Mackenzie for BBC Films, won awards that year at Edinburgh, Philadelphia and Bratislava. He has two projects currently in production; Rosita for Nordisk Film and a tv series Broken for DR. He is currently working on Funny Man for Sigma Films and If You Love Somebody for Hyde Park Films.
His major feature credits include the compelling family drama Someone You Love for Zentropa; In Order of Disappearance, a thriller for Norway’s Paradox Spillefilm; the sexually intriguing A Caretaker’s Tale for Zentropa; Happy End, a melodrama for Zentropa; Room 304, a story of love and longing, for Alphaville Pictures;Big Plans, a comedy for Angel Films; the multi-award winning comedy-drama A Somewhat Gentle Man for Paradox, starring Stellan Skarsgård; the bitter sweet award winning Okay for Bech Film; Nimbus Film’s Prague, about a family’s emotional breakdown; the romantic comedy Old, New, Borrowed and Blue for Nimbus Film; The Family for Zentropa; the Nimbus comedy A Soap; and Nordisk Film’s dramatic Aftermath.
His many screenwriting awards include a Roberts for Den Eneste Ene; a Warsaw Film Festival award for Accused; Best Screenplay at Hamburg for Schwarzweiss Filmproduktion’s Mercy; Best Screenplay at Oporto for Rene Hjerter; Golden Swan Award at Copenhagen for To Love Someone; plus a further 12 nominations. In 2003 The Danish Union of Film Critics presented him with the Bodil Award for services to Danish Film-Making.
Kim started working as an illustrator and cartoonist in 1982 and published his first children’s book in 1984, Who Dares To Awaken The Gods. Since then he’s published a further 100 children’s books for which he’s received many awards both nationally and internationally. He also writes novels, television and radio plays. He writes for the theatre too and in 2010 he received the Danish Playwriters Guild Award.
